Honda GC160 on cart

Postby WAB » Wed Oct 18, 2006 11:17 am

What modifications would I have to make to use one of these GC160 motors on a go cart?
I read that they are made for steady RPM useage, like on a pressure washer.

Thanks

looks like you can just drop it in and hook it up, but you probably want to ask one of the honda guys

a1moldmaker, i think you can hook up an accel pedal to it, what it means by a fixed throttle, its kind of like a rev limiter on a car, it can only go up to 5000 rpm

The max RPM of 5k is not a big deal. Looks like the B&S go cart motor's max RPM is only 3900. http://shakyparts.com/honda.html

I was hoping somebody had used one of these on a cart and could povide some insight as to what was involved to get it to work.

You cant remove "fixed throttle" you have to all "return throttle". Look into the GX series. they are more for your application, and the knock off's are very cheap! Honda parts will fit on the knock off engines also.

I have a gx390 clone (honda copy) on my kart....When the enginesstock they have a lever on them to set the idel for generators, power washers ect.....You'll have to remove that arm and make up a cable to attach to the linkage....If you have any fabricating skills or know of someone that does, making the throttle work will not be a big deal.........I solved the throttle linkage problem on my engine my making a custom intake manifold and using a Mikuni carb but thats a whole new ball game there........If you have a motorcycle/ gokart shop around they should be able to help you out...............If you live near Toledo Ohio I can help ya.......

here is my set up

The hoses are for the fuel pump and to the carb....I am using 1/4" hose.....

Paint: I stripped and blasted the frame, welded the cage to the frame and at all points of where it bolted together originally, ground and smoothed the welds...primed it with an automotive 2 part epoxy primer (DP40) and then sprayed it bright red.....

Engine mods right now are a custom made question mark (?) style step down exhaust, custom made intake manifold, mikuni 22 mm carb (26mm mikuni coming next week).....Briggs fuel pump....removed the govenor

Right now with the 22mm carb the kart will almost pull the front wheels from a dead dig......The engine is still running lean so I am going with a 26mm next week....

There are some more pics in the Manco section under "My manco almost done"

This site is frustrating. I typed a long post, hit submit, and got this: Mistake! There was an attempt of an automatic insert of the message in our Forum. Your message was automatically deleted.
WTF??

Anyway, I bought a B&S Intek 205 5.5hp OHV off eBay for $60. It wa brand new and the seller was local so I met him & picked it up.
Now I need a clutch, chain, and a longer throttle cable. The cable for the old motor is too short for the new motor. Going to the local dump thiis weekend to try & find a longer cable off a mower or bicycle. Wish me luck!!

It is easy to mod. You just have to make some brackets for the cable to hold to, and mess with the carb a bit and BAM there you go.
That is what she said.

Honda 5.0 engine swap

Postby cheko_sk8r » Fri May 14, 2010 3:45 am

I am attempting the same thing. I have a manco dingo with a broken tecumseh motor. I put a Honda GC160 from a pressure washer. My problem isn't the acc. cable (at least not yet). I just can't find a cen. clutch to fit into the motor. the crank shaft is thicker yet shorter than the tecumseh crankshaft. Any ideas?

hoda mod

Postby steve45 » Fri May 21, 2010 4:36 am

im bot 2 attempt the same. with a honda gc160. they do have short shafts. so i think using a jackshaft should take care of the short shaft and the thicker shaft. u would get a sprocket that fits ur honda put a chain from the motor to the jackshaft sprocket. then put a clutch on the other end of the jshaft run a chain to the axle sprocket. i haven't try this yet but ill put updates up when i do and u could play around with different size sprockets 2 get a lil gear ratio going.
