What size engine?

Postby manco12 » Sun May 17, 2009 9:15 am

Hello again,

I have decided to pause the bike project I was going to work on. My dune buggy needs some work done. The engine smokes when it gets warm. So, I would like to put a snowmobile, motorcycle, or possibly a small vw engine if any will fit. I would like it to be able to go 85 MPH. Only because I can drive on a flat and straight pavemented path! I would want it set up to have somewhat slow acceleration to help with the back tires. What size engine do you guys recommend?

Also, remember this is a heavy two seater Manco deuce frame!

Thanks!

I wouldnt go any bigger than a small V-twin, and a Torque convertor.

I mean, a 13hp Honda with a TC can do some serious moving, and no way in hell Id go over 45 in a deuce.

Ive done 65+ in a fully race prepper race chassis with an engine turning out over 20hp, and it is unbeleiveable, you cant react at that speed. A twitch of th wheel and you are in some serious trouble fast.

if your buggy is a deuve i agree with red going 45mph in my kart now is pretty scary and its very sensitive

but if its like and actual sandrail buggy then check junkyards or find a motorcycle engine or something

but if its a deuce then like red said 13hp honda with a couple mods will send you flying also check out robin engines

well then id say you could find a used v-twin around $300-$400 for a nice one not many miles and with some mods you could have a shifter kart

or purchase something like a snowmobile engine which should get you up to atleast 60mph with a kart like a deuce

seeing that your engine sits on the swing arm, the heavier the engine is, the worst it will be on the efficiency or your rear suspension. So with something like a VW (like your were asking about), would be terrible.

well if it could fit you could rig it up to work but youd have to use a chain or do major work and it would bend youreframe
