I punished my engine...then it punished me.

As some of you may recall Ive got an old Carter flat frame cart than I rebuilt and modded some.

I dropped a Kohler XKE on it and so far the engine has been flawless save for a blown head gasket.

LAst week I created a 250 foot long tri oval (think Pocono), in the feild behind my house.

So I repaired my broken jackshaft, dropped on a new Hardened 16t sprocket for more acceleration and a air of new chains, and took it for a spin today for the first time.

I was turning some nice laps, figuring out where I need to modify the track for more speed, and I noticed the exhaust note changed, and a drop in power.

So I checked the air filter and it was clean, I was getting fuel flow, oil was fresh and at the full mark.

So I pulled off the track and drove around and did some donuts i nthe wet grass and it seemed normal, just low on power with a noticeable exhaust pitch change. I also noted the muffler tips were black.

I took it for some speed runs down the road every time Id go for top speed (6500 rpms) I noticed I got {flaxulation} and {flaxulation} away, even with my foot all the way in it. Then it lost power dramtically.

I decided to finish that run, turn around at the end of the road and come back home, pull the head and check things out..then suddenly it bogged, backfired violently for a few seconds, then died. had a metallic rapping sound when I pulled the rope, lots of compression, but wouldnt try to start.

I assumed I had just made some major error pushing it and killed it.

It punished me bacause I had to push it home..thats a solid 8 minute push, partially uphill, then through grass on our property to the shop. it was 90% humidity and 90*.

Pulled the valve cover and found the Exhaust side rocker stud had backed out, and the rocker nut was loose. The rocker itself was off the pushrod which was off the lifter.

Put it all back together with some loctite and it was like night and day. Full power again! woohoo I thought Id killed it!

Also, Ive got a camera, Ill scrape the dirt off the kart and and touchup the paint chips and get some pics for ya, also some pics of the track.

Tell me about it.

Im going to put on some Tecumseh OHH50 rockers next time I have the valve cover off, they bolt right on, and appear to have a slightly more rigid design. You'd be shocked at all the flexing that happens at 6500 +.

If I bolt on a PZ22 slide carb, and a billet rod, some beefier springs...Im looking at 7500+.

Clements head, 8000+ making over 25hp on Alky with a Tilly pumper.

Lots of room to play with it. The XKE F200 motor "the mule" can go a whole season of racing at 0ver 9000 rpms before it needs a refresh. She's a tough one!

Ill clean her up and get some pics...but you have to promise not to laugh at my custom Exhaust pipe...I painted it but the paint is all burnt off (1800 degree paint mind you) down to the Y-pipe. And riding in the rain and stuff...its got surface rust on it.

it must! lol
mine runs about 750. and it is really thin, so it does hold that heat long enough to mess the paint up.

I had a 18hp Briggs OHV engine grenade a rod yesterday...my luck ran out!

Customers machine, he ran it low on oil. I changed the oil, fired it up and 10 seconds later I had shrapnel.

Delivered it this afternoon, ran like a champ, worked great.

Ive known him my whole life, he was also one of my first customers. He knows he's abused it, and neglected to change the oil.

Money has nothing to do with it.

It's about caring. Some people care enough to check and change their oil, or pay someone like me good money to do it for them. Some people dont care about oil, they dont care about their engine, they just run it till it quits.

The problem is that when a mower goes 2 years without an oil change, and it blows up, the owner acts like it's the manufacturers fault. They act like after they tried to pull a stump out with a murray and the trans is broke, it's not their fault.

I had a 1 year old Murray 20.5/46 come in with a bad trans, it made a grinding noise, and jumped. I noted the 2" ball on the bumper, and the back of the hitch plate was all distorted...he then denied pulling anything..
