question about "Honda Copy" motor

Postby Bruce70 » Mon Oct 15, 2007 11:29 pm

If I get one of these, how do I convert the throttle to be used with a go kart type throttle setup? What parts do I need to buy? Thanks

Just swapped a Harbor Freight Honda clone motor for my cousin a couple weeks ago, and setup my Honda GX200 tonight...it's simple!

You take off the air filter, housing, etc..take the 2 nuts off the front of the carb and slide the whole air filter assembly off.

now you will see the throttle arm next to the gas tank. towards the carb = faster. now follow it to the pivot point, and loosen that nut until the lever moves freely.

Now get a small spring, and hook it to one of the various holes in the throttle arm and anchor it somewhere. This will serve as your return spring. Mine is built into the kart, and so is my cousins. If yours isnt, there are many places to hook a return spring.

Next, you will want to bring in your throttle cable from the recoil side, between the carb and gas tank.

Next you will look at the pivoting lever, towards the muffler, there will be a series of 3 holes. Hook your throttle cable to one of these holes. Then bring your conduit out to the fixed position plate next to the gas tank. Should see a tiny threaded hole. You will need to procure a conduit clip. I get them off old lawn mower thorttle cabes and stuff. THe clip goes over the throttle cable, a scres goes through it, and pinches the throttle cable conduit to the fixed position plate. So when you give it gas, the inner wire/cable moves, but the conduit on the outside doesnt.

Hard to explain without pictures, but it only takes me about 5 minutes total to take a length of conduit, and inner wire, cut to length, make the Z bend a the end, attatch it, and put it all together.

If you are using a flexible cable, like on a racing kart, or something, you will need to hook it up some other way than I have explained.

Regardless, the end result will require the lever to be pulled towards the carb, if you can find a way to acheive that, anf hook on a return spring, you will be good to go. The linkages look intimidating at first, but they are actually very simple, just isolate the pivoting arm, thats all you will be messing with.

Id degovern it, and hook the throttle to the carb...but we dont advise degoverning here...motors just tend to blow up easier when the governors' laying on the bench.

Thanks guys, this will be for my little parade kart, but I am going to reinforce the frame and raise the ride height with a new axle, maybe even a diff, new spindles, tires and disk brakes, and some bigger tires, like the small golf car lookin tires. I hope to have a kart with concession kart type quality. I will probably leave the governor intact. I am planning on spending quite a bit of money to get it the way I want, but it will be a solid heavy duty reliable kart when I get done, thanks for all the input.

I dont know if you have a Harbor Freight in town, but around Christmas, they send out these little 15% off coupons, a 129.99 clone can be had for 15% off at that point.

That is odd if ya ask me

perhaps its because of the words it can be used with
If its broke we can Fix it.
If it isn't broke, we can make it better.
If we can't make it better, you don't want to ride it!!

That's odd that mother is mother. They must have heard my mother talk.

I actually imagined a number of other words were censored in the message in question and one's giver of life was not one of the words I imagined. A female dog seemed to fit the best...obviously that gave me an entirely different impression in many ways.

My point is - I would remove the m-word from the censored list.

I'm Sure KJ has a good reason for it being on there.

Why not PM him and ask him about it. I am sure he will give you a straight answer on it

Ive recently been made aware of "liabilities" of the Gokart engine game...

The only engines certified for Kart use are the 150 "cycle" engines, and the 250 "cycle engines" and the Tecumseh Power Sport engines. So thats all I can recoomend at this point to you. The Clones arent certified for kart use, Briggs Inteks, Kohlers, Robins...the list goes on. If someone uses one, and gets hurt, the liabilty trail can be killer.

However, if someone uses a Tec, and the throttle sticks, and they get hurt, Tecusmeh takes a hit...liabilty stops there.

The TECS arent bad engines...some can be had with a choke, which is really really nice.
